Technology Setup

Videoconferencing System:

The videoconferencing system can be either a standalone unit (such as Polycom, Tandberg, etc.) or a computer-based system (PC with a webcam and Skype software).
  • If you have a standalone videoconferencing system, make sure it is connected using IP.
  • If you have a computer-based videoconferencing system, you have to install Skype™. Skype™ is available to download for both Windows and Macs.

Connection Testing Procedures:

  • Test the audio/video connection at least one week before the mission.
  • Call the Challenger Technical Coordinator using the phone number on the Contact page.
  • Run a 5 minute videoconference test using the connection address given by the Technical Coordinator. This address will be the same during Mission Day.
  • Test the Data Center on at least one computer. The URL for the Data Center will also be given by the Technical Coordinator.

Mission Day Connection Procedures

  • Connect the videoconference using the predetermined address during the testing procedures at least 20 minutes before the actual mission time.
  • Make sure that the camera can see the member(s) of the Communications Team.
  • Have at least one computer for each Planet Team.
