Lesson 11: Hurricane Georges

Basic Readings

    None

Recommended Readings

  • Hurricane Georges
  • Hits Puerto Rico
  • Three Months After

Homework Due

  • Turn in article Review Questions.

Overview

  • Students read about Hurricane Georges and its aftermath. They focus on their spheres the effect of the storm on their spheres and the concept of change in nature over time.

Duration

  • 20 min. Students review Hurricane Georges articles
  • 20 min. Students complete ESS analysis of Hurricane Georges

Materials

  • Articles
  • Map of the Caribbean including both Puerto Rico and Montserrat (not provided here)

Topics

  • The science of hurricanes: parts of a hurricane & features, system of categorization, the math behind hurricane tracking (distance X rate = time), water cycle, storm surge
  • Vocabulary: advisory, monsoon, storm surge
  • Event to sphere interactions for hurricanes
  • Short- or long- term event to sphere interactions for hurricanes

Outcomes

  • Students are able to describe the short-term and long-term impact of Hurricane Georges on their sphere and other spheres.
  • Students complete the two analysis worksheets.

Discussion Tips
As students discuss the event-to-sphere interactions, be sure to encourage them to also consider and write about sphere-to-sphere interactions. Since this is their third time to do an Earth science analysis, you should expect richer and deeper responses— exhibiting a greater understanding of how the pieces within a system work and interact.

Special Comments
One of the other implications of Hurricane Georges was its effect upon the food web. This would be a good opportunity to go into greater depth on the topic of the food chain.

Procedure
Students complete an Earth science analysis of the hurricane event. ERT members each offer their sphere's perspective of the effects of the hurricane event. They discuss how four different perspectives might give their team a big picture. Students read about Hurricane Georges and its aftermath. They focus on their spheres the effect of the storm on their spheres and the concept of change in nature over time
