Minimum Outcomes: By the time students are done with these activities, they should be able to: Define components of the four Earth system science (ESS) spheres and some of their primary features.

Describe how an event may influence a sphere. Contribute meaningfully to the team process. t-Minus 3 Weeks Student Directive: You've been accepted. Your mission is to provide expertise to the people of Montserrat. On that day a space shuttle will be launched to repair the malfunctioning LEO satellite. Your team should prepare by studying volcanoes. Student Tasks: Event Analysis, Charting Activities Event: Mt. Pinatubo eruptions Going Deeper-Optional Focus: Lithosphere Teams: 4 person ERTs Instruction: 5 periods Minimum Outcomes: By the time students are done with these activities, they should be able to: Describe the impact of volcanic activity upon various aspects of the four ESS spheres. Understand the connection between volcanic activity data and what precautions humans should take. Be able to chart volcanic activity data. t-Minus 2 Weeks Student Directive: The mission is occurring at the height of hurricane season. Be prepared to give advice about hurricanes. Student Tasks: Event Analysis, Hurricane Tracking Activities Event: Hurricane Georges Going Deeper-Optional Focus: Atmosphere Teams: 4 person ERTs Instruction: 5 periods Minimum Outcomes: By the time students are done with these activities, they should be able to: Describe the impact of the storm/hurricane event upon the four ESS spheres. Understand the connection between hurricane activity data and what precautions humans should take. Be able to chart hurricane activity data. t-Minus 1 Week
