Terms Related to the Integumentary System

Acne—a disorder of the skin caused by inflammation of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles; marked by pimples and blackheads, especially on the face 

Alopecia—loss of hair

Boil—a localized swelling and inflammation of the skin resulting from bacterial infection of a hair follicle; usually has a hard central core and forms pus

Cyst—1) a closed sac having a distinct membrane and developing abnormally in a body cavity or structure

2) a resistant capsule around a parasite produced by the parasite  

Dermatitis—inflammation of the skin

Eczema—an inflammatory condition of the skin marked by redness, itching, and oozing lesions which become scaly and crusted

Impetigo—an acute contagious staphylococcal or streptococcal skin disease marked by pustules and yellowish crusts

Keloid—a thick scar resulting from excessive growth of fibrous tissue

Melanoma—a benign or malignant skin tumor containing dark pigment

Pediculosis—infestation with lice

Pruritus—localized or generalized itching

Pustule—a small round elevation of the skin containing pus and having an inflamed base

Scabies—contagious condition that itches, forms crusts and is caused by parasitic mites

Ulcer—an open sore

Urticaria—the raised red patch of skin or mucous membrane characteristic of hives

Wart—a flesh-colored, raised area caused by a viral infection
